Facebook will match donations on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning on Tuesday in an attempt to raise awareness of the many charities across the globe and encourage generosity among citizens of the world.

Facebook will begin the day matching 100 percent of the first donations until the company reaches its first $2 million-matches made. That means, if you donate $100 to a charity of your choosing through Facebook, the network will also donate $100 to that charity. The remaining $5 million in donations will be matched at a 10 percent rate.

Donors should be mindful that there is a cap on the amount Facebook will match qualifying donations. In effort to spread out all the generosity and ensure many nonprofits and organizations are helped on Giving Tuesday, Facebook will only match donations of up to $100,000 made by actual nonprofits while match caps made by individual donors are set at $20,000. All US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations are able to receive matched-donations through Facebook.

Givers will have to wait a while to learn whether or not Facebook matched donations. The social media site said information on the status of the matched donations won’t likely be available until at least mid-January 2021. Participants can track information on the status of the match through the “Facebook Pay” tab within their individual Facebook “Settings” page. They’ll also receive an official notification from Facebook once the match is complete.

Those looking for charities to support during Giving Tuesday can find dozens of them on Facebook’s “Fundraisers” page.

Launched in 2012, Giving Tuesday has become a global movement to inspire generosity. While Facebook plans to do its part by matching monetary donations, there are multiple ways people around the world can participate in the day that don’t necessarily require spending money. The mission of Giving Tuesday is simply to foster a society that is more gracious and inspires people to work together and help one another, according to the Giving Tuesday website.

“Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to give,” it’s mission statement reads.
