Let’s look at how these missions and rewards work so you can take advantage of these features.
Nintendo Switch Online Missions and Rewards Overview
On the main menu of your Switch, select the Nintendo Switch Online icon from the bottom row (then choose your user account, if you have multiple). This will open a hub of information about Nintendo’s online membership. Here, on the left sidebar, you’ll see a Missions & Rewards tab. If you don’t see this menu, head to Settings > System > System Update and install any pending updates.
Be aware that you must be a Switch Online member to take advantage of this app and its contents. See our guide to Nintendo Switch Online to get started if you haven’t joined yet.
Completing Switch Online Missions to Earn Platinum Points
Select the Missions button at the top of this menu, represented by a red stamp, to check the available missions for the week. These include simple tasks like opening the Switch Online app, playing a game with online capabilities, or backing up your save data. While you might consider these the Nintendo Switch equivalent of achievements, they don’t pose a challenge, so they’re more like Xbox Game Pass Quests than proper achievements.
As you complete these missions, you’ll earn more Platinum Points.
Note that you might already be earning these points as a member of My Nintendo; it’s also worth regularly completing missions on that service to maximize your points. Most of these are simple tasks like staying subscribed to Nintendo’s email newsletter and finding hidden icons on websites for Nintendo games, but you can also earn points for completing goals in Nintendo’s mobile titles.
When you’re ready to spend them, head back to the main Missions & Rewards screen to browse the items on offer.
Redeeming Switch Online Rewards
The rewards Nintendo offers here allow you to unlock unique backgrounds, frames, and characters for your Nintendo Switch profile icon. You’ll need to use the Platinum Points you earned earlier.
The personalization options that are available to purchase change regularly. At the time of writing, there are offerings from Splatoon 3 until the next month, alongside Kirby’s Dream Buffet options that will swap out the following week.
To assemble a new avatar, select the Icon Collection button at the top-right of the page. There you can select a background, character, and frame to create a fresh look. Unfortunately, you’re limited to using icon elements from the same game, so you can’t combine a background from Splatoon with a character from Animal Crossing.
When done, the app lets you save your creation as your Switch profile picture. You can create several icons and swap them out as you wish.
A Touch of Switch Profile Customization
While these icons aren’t anything outstanding, they let you add flair to your Switch profile icon. Be sure to check back in regularly to earn more points and unlock everything on offer. It’s an easy task to add to your gaming schedule, since the missions only take a moment to complete.
While you’re at it, you should take advantage of the other ways to customize your Switch’s interface.
